Nuts & Bolts of German: Perfect tense: The class of -ieren

Roboter produzieren ein Auto.

Die Autos sind fertig. Die Roboter

haben viele Autos produziert.


Die junge Frau studiert in Berlin.

Ihre Großmutter hat früher auch in Berlin studiert.

When talking about the past, Germans most often use the perfect tense. The perfect tense of verbs ending in -ieren is formed by using

the conjugated form of  in the present tense + the past participle of the main verb which goes to the end of the clause.


formation of the past participle of verbs ending in -ieren: stem of the verb + t

fotografieren -> stem of the verb = fotografier + t = fotografiert

exportieren -> stem of the verb = exportier + t = exportiert

telefonieren -> stem of the verb = telefonier + t = telefoniert

*exception: verlieren (to lose), past participle: verloren
