Nuts & Bolts of German: Perfect tense: Doing & done

Du machst den Salat.

Der Salat ist fertig. Du hast den Salat für die Party gemacht.

Ich putze das Fenster.

Das Fenster ist sauber. Ich habe heute Morgen das Fenster geputzt.


In German, the perfect tense is generally used when talking about the past. The perfect tense of weak verbs like putzen and machen is formed by using

the conjugated form of  in the present tense + the past participle of the main verb which goes to the end of the clause.


formation of the past participle: ge- + stem of the verb + t (sometimes you need “et ” to make pronunciation easier), e.g.

suchen -> stem of the verb = such : ge +such + t = gesucht

spielen -> stem of the verb = spiel : ge + spiel + t = gespielt

arbeiten -> stem of the verb = arbeit : ge + arbeit + et = gearbeitet
