The indirect object is the noun or pronoun that indicates the person (sometimes the thing) to or for whom the action is done, e.g.

 

Ich habe dir die Notizen am Montag gegeben. (I gave you the notes on Monday.)

Gestern haben meine Eltern meiner Schwester einen Computer gekauft. (Yesterday my parents bought a computer for my sister.)

An indirect object is in the dative case.

 

It mainly occurs together with an accusative object.

 

Usually the indirect object is a person, whereas the direct object is a thing.

Step 2 Identify the subject! (Establish who (or what) performs the action in the sentence.) Die Großmutter erzählt den Kindern ein Märchen.

Er hat uns das Haus gezeigt.

Können Sie mir noch eine Flasche Wasser bringen?

Gestern haben meine Eltern meiner Schwester einen Computer gekauft.

Step 3 Identify the direct object! (Ask yourself the following question: The subject is doing what?) The grandmother is telling what? - Die Großmutter erzählt den Kindern ein Märchen.

 

He has shown what? - Er hat uns das Haus gezeigt.

 

Can you bring what? - Können Sie mir noch eine Flasche Wasser bringen?

 

Yesterday my parents bought what? - Gestern haben meine Eltern meiner Schwester einen Computer gekauft.
Step 4 Identify the indirect object! (Ask yourself the following question: The subject is doing what to whom or for whom?) The grandmother is telling the fairy tale  to whom? - Die Großmutter erzählt den Kindern ein Märchen.

 

He has shown the house to whom? - Er hat uns das Haus gezeigt.

 

Can you bring another bottle of water to whom? - Können Sie mir noch eine Flasche Wasser bringen?

 

Yesterday my parents bought a computer for whom? - Gestern haben meine Eltern meiner Schwester einen Computer gekauft.

 

The following verbs can be used with a direct and an indirect object (they are mainly verbs of giving, showing, telling or recommending):

 

geben (to give sth. to sb.)

 Er hat ihm kein Geld gegeben. (He didn't give him any money.)

schenken (to give sth. [as a present] to sb.)

 Was hast du deinem Freund geschenkt? (What did you give your friend?)

leihen (to lend sth. to sb.)

 Kannst du ihm deine Kamera leihen? (Can you lend him your camera?)

reichen (to pass sth. to sb.)

 Reichen Sie mir bitte die Butter. (Please pass me the butter.)

bringen (to bring sth. to sb.)

 Was hat euch der Weihnachtsmann gebracht? (What did Santa Claus bring you?)

schicken/senden (to send sth. to sb.)

 Wie viele SMS schickst du deiner Freundin jeden Tag? (How many text messages do you send your girlfriend every day?)

liefern (to deliver sth. to sb.)

 Wir können Ihnen das Sofa zwischen 14 Uhr und 16 Uhr liefern. (We can deliver the sofa to you between the hours of 2 o'clock and 4 o'clock.)

kaufen (to buy sth. for sb.)

 Sie haben ihrer Tochter ein Fahrrad gekauft. (The bought a bike for their daughter.)
   

zeigen (to show sth. to sb.)

 Hast du deinen Eltern das Haus gezeigt? (Did you show the house to your parents?)

erklären (to explain sth. to sb.)

 Die Dozentin erklärt den Studenten die Grammatik. (The lecturer is explaining the grammar to the students.)
   

sagen (to say sth. to sb.)

 Warum sagen Sie mir nicht die Wahrheit? (Why don't you tell me the truth?)

versprechen ( to promise sth. to sb.)

 Das kann ich dir nicht verspechen. (I can't promise this to you.)

erzählen (to tell sth. to sb.)

 Er hat ihr alles erzählt. (He told her everything.)

verbieten (to forbid sb. to do sth.)

 Das kannst du mir nicht verbieten. (You can't forbid me doing this.) [lit. translation: You can forbid this to me.]
   

empfehlen (to recommend sth. to sb.)

 Was können Sie uns empfehlen? (What can you recommend to us?)

 

 

Indirect objects generally come before direct objects, e.g.

 

Sie zeigt ihrem Freund das Haus. She is showing her friend the house.

But: If the direct object is a personal pronoun (mich, dich, ihn, sie, es .....etc.), the direct object comes before the indirect object,  e.g.

 

Sie zeigt es ihrem Freund. She is showing it to her friend.
Sie zeigt es ihm. She is showing it to him.
