There is a group of adjectives that end in -er which are based on the names of cities, towns, regions and the country of Switzerland.

These adjectives always start with a capital letter, they always come before the noun and they never add an ending, e.g.

das Parlament in Wien

Wiener Würstchen

Worms ist eine Stadt in Rheinland-Pfalz.

Das ist der Wormser Dom.

Wir besuchen den Wormser Dom.

Wir gehen zum Wormser Dom

das Bundesland Brandenburg

das Brandenburger Tor

Luzern liegt in der Schweiz

Schweizer Schokolade

To facilitate pronunciation, the last vowel of the place name can sometimes be dropped, e.g.

die Frauenkirche in München

Münchner Weißwürste mit süßem Senf

und einer Brezel

In the instance of Bremen, the “en” is dropped before adding the ending –er:

der Marktplatz in Bremen

die Bremer Stadtmusikanten

And some place names add an umlaut when they are used as adjectives in this way, e.g.

der Schwarzwald

ein Stück Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte

Rheinland-Pfalz

Pfälzer Weine
