In German, all nouns have a grammatical gender, they are
masculine (m), feminine (f) or neuter (n).
The grammatical gender is
often indicated by the definite article, "der" for masculine,
"die" for feminine and "das" for neuter.
Although there seems to be no apparent rationale for this
classification [Firma
(company) for example is feminine, whereas Unternehmen
(company) is neuter], the ending of the noun or its meaning
often help to predict its gender. Therefore it is a very good
idea to familiarize yourself with these guidelines.
