Nuts & Bolts of German: Subject: Where is it?

A noun (e.g. friend, table, pride, idea) and its modifiers (e.g. the, a, this, my old, his interesting) or a personal pronoun (e.g. he, she, they, it) can play different roles in a sentence, one of them is the role of the subject. The subject performs the action expressed by the verb(s) in the sentence.

So the first step is always to locate the verb(s) in a sentence and then ask yourself "who" or "what" performs the action expressed by the verb(s).
