I have to go to the supermarket.

In English, you always use "to" no matter whether you go/travel/drive to a building, a city, a country, a person etc. German uses different words for "to". Wir fahren oft nach Lübeck.


Sie fährt nach London. Der Zug fährt nach München. Fliegt ihr wieder nach Irland? Ich fahre nach Heidelberg. Fliegt ihr nach China?
Fliegt Aer Lingus nach Stuttgart? Ich fahre im Sommer nach Boston. Gehst du wieder nach Salzburg? Ich fahre nach Vietnam. Wann fliegt ihr nach Australien?
Ich reise nach Spanien. Frau Maier reist jedes Jahr nach Afrika. Fliegst du nach Marokko? Sie fährt am Wochenende nach Grindelwald. Meine Freunde fahren nach Paris.
Ihr fliegt nach Buenos Aires. Wie oft fährst du nach Dublin? Ihr fliegt nach Finnland. Wir fahren heute Abend nach Hause. Ich reise oft nach Asien.

But: Sie fährt oft in die Schweiz. Fahren Sie in den Oman? Wann fliegt ihr in die USA? Sie reisen in die Niederlande. Er fährt in die Tschechische Republik.

The German equivalent of "to" is "" when one goes/travels/drives/flies to a city, a to , a vi or a co as well as to all co that don't have a definite article. Thankfully, there are very few countries that have an article. So it will be easy to learn the few exceptions (e.g. die Schweiz, der Oman, die USA, die Niederlande, die Tschechische Republik).

 

Also, "nach" is used in the expression "to go ". In German, you basically say "to go to home".
