Nuts & Bolts of German: Accusative case: "es gibt" - Anything close by?

"es gibt ..." is the German equivalent of "there is ..." or "there are ..." as in "There are no snakes in Ireland." or "Is there a pastry shop nearby?"

 

In that German expression, the "es" plays the subject of the sentence. The element that completes the expression is the direct object and has to be in the accusative case. So the German equivalents of "no snakes" and " a pastry shop" are in the accusative case.
