Conjunctions (linking words) are words like "and", "because", "therefore", "or" etc., which link

• words, e.g. Ich brauche, Brot, Butter und Käse. (I need bread, butter and cheese.)

• phrases, e.g. Sie spielt am Montag und am Dienstag Tennis. (She plays tennis on Monday and on Tuesday.)

• clauses, e.g. Sie liest und er kocht das Abendessen. (She is reading and he is cooking dinner.)

• or sentences, e.g. Heute muss ich bis 18 Uhr arbeiten. Und morgen fliege ich nach Spanien. (Today I have to work until 6.00 in the evening. And tomorrow  I’ll fly to Spain.)

There are 3 different groups of conjunctions:

 

1. Coordinating conjunctions: und (and), oder (or), aber (but), denn (because)

 

They have no effect on the word order, e.g.

Sie ist zwanzig Jahre alt. Sie studiert Medizin.
Sie ist zwanzig Jahre alt und sie studiert Medizin.

(She is twenty years old and she studies medicine.)
 

Wir können ins Kino gehen. Wir können zu Hause bleiben.
Wir können ins Kino gehen oder wir können zu Hause bleiben.

(We can go to the cinema or we can stay at home.)

Sie kommt aus München. Sie lebt schon lange in Hamburg.
Sie kommt aus München, aber sie lebt schon lange in Hamburg.

(She is from Munich but she has been living in Hamburg for a long time.)

Sie kauft eine Grammatik. Sie möchte Deutsch lernen.
Sie kauft eine Grammatik, denn sie möchte Deutsch lernen.

(She buys a grammar book because she wants to learn German.)
